Laser printers are for businesses

Only a few years ago (which in computer years is a very long time ago!) laser printers tended to be purchased mainly by businesses.

This was due to the enormous price tag attached to them. Earlier laser printers were also very large, and VERY heavy, not the sort of thing you would want on your desk (and some lightweight modern desks would just collapse under the weight of them!)

These days though, laser printers are cheaper, and available in sizes from tiny to huge! You can also find countless quality lasers available second hand - you can often buy a high quality second hand laser for less than the price of a new inkjet printer. Another reason people often associate Laser printers with business is the higher cost of the consumables, it is true that some lasers will need parts like the drum replacing every so often, and toners are expensive but think about it logically -

Using example figures, not based on any particular real printers

A laser printer may give 6000 pages of text (at 5% coverage) for a £40 toner cartridge, whereas a inkjet cartridge may only cost £10 it could give around 300 pages based on the same 5%. Based on those figures you would have to buy 20 inkjet cartridges to equal just one toner cartridge - a total of £200 for the inkjet, compared to £40 for the laser toner!
